Australian Shepherd: Industrious, Smart, and Protective
It is but a desire of everyone to find a pet that’s dependable, highly intelligent, adorable, and plausibly industrious. Having a pet with such characteristics makes our lives undeniably a lot easier and happier for the fact that finally, we have a companion that we can depend on and who will be loyal to us. These and more are what the Australian Shepherd breed is made of so adopting this pet is definitely a good if not the best choice you will make.
Although called Australian Shepherd, this fair- length pelted pet did not originally appear in the land down under. Studies have it that this breed came from the mystical Pyrenees mountains of either Spain or France or somewhere in between these breathtakingly beautiful countries. The breed arrived in the US in 1800s and it is there that it became popular and in time, improved and flourished.
The Australian Shepherd, also interestingly called Aussie, is noted not only for its high intelligence and bursting energy but most importantly, for its innate and outstanding herding and guarding abilities. These qualities are forever planted in their souls that even if those breed that weren’t actually reared for such jobs or environment, the inborn instinct for herding and guarding still comes out whenever they chance upon a flock.
In a farm, the Aussie is an excellent work dog doing every task industriously and masterfully such as herding livestock, searching and rescuing lost cattle, and obeying the master whole-heartedly. Inside the house they are affectionate and loyal to the family and infinitely playful to the children, however, they are intrinsically suspicious of strangers but this temperament makes them a prime guard dog. The Aussie is also distinct in having a possessive and protective nature towards its masters that’s why you will see them always adoringly tailing and following their masters around!
Being an innately over-hyper dog, the Aussie have the tendency to be limitless thus running, frolicking, chasing, and endless running again are its natural activities. Neglecting these potentials can be a damaging thing for they will direct this unguided energy in to unreasonable romping (it may cause damage to properties), obnoxious barking, chewing on things, and others. They may also become adamant and careless and will demand time and constant attention from the masters and this can be quite unbearable and annoying at times.
This breed, just like any other breeds, needs to be exercised mentally and physically daily. The absence of these activities in their daily regimen will cause negative and problem behaviors in them such as improperly channeled energy, chewing, loud and annoying rough-housing, and other damaging- to- properties kind of acts. Their active spirit and untiring energy must be matched by an active lifestyle in able to instill focus and teach good behaviors in them.
If situated with a not-so active family, the Australian Shepherd must be given special activity instead, in respect to their natural active self. They should be given opportunity to run around and play heartily in an open field, if not everyday, at least at regular intervals. When not at work or at play, this breed must be kept limited to a safe range for the sight of flock of animals and children will automatically trigger the innate herder and trafficker in them.
Aussies, also known by an array of names such as Spanish Shepherd, Pastor Dog, Bob-Tail, Blue Heeler, New Mexican Shepherd, and California Shepherd; are wonderful dogs and are clearly great companions. For those who have an outgoing and active lifestyle, this dog can undoubtedly keep up with the intensity; actually they will really love it. With proper training and good exposure, they can win not only your heart but everyone else’s as well.

I can honestly say, by experience that I agree with all above, except in the aussie being suspicious of strangers, since my three aussies just love everyone that comes in the door, stranger or not.
