How To Tame Your Parrot – The Basics
A parrot is a wild animal. Since it will take some time to tame the bird, you should know the appropriate steps to make them feel that you are their friend.
Once the parrot is at your home, it is important that he be around people who love birds and that he stay in his cage for at least the first 24 hours. If the parrot appears nervous, slow down and allow it more time.
When you think the parrot is ready to come out, cover all the mirrors and windows then open the cage. Soon, the bird will come out and if it doesn’t, entice it with some food or a branch. Make sure to keep your hair out of the way and wear clothing that will not easily be snagged.
Don’t ever speak in a loud voice to your parrots. Do not look straight into his eyes or he will think you are a predator.
If your parrot does not want to take food from your hands, then use clippings and put them in the cage. You should praise them whenever they eat so eventually, you can feed them using your own hand.
The parrot will have to fly once in a while to exercise its wings. If the bird is still frightened, you can use a low bird stand and two sticks of varying lengths to carry the bird around. Two sticks are needed so the parrot can go from one stick to the other. This must be done slowly but deliberately as sudden movements will frighten the parrot.
The first few weeks of taming a parrot are going to be challenging. Once you have made some improvements, you can now teach it certain commands like “step up”. This will teach the bird that you are the master and if this is said, the parrot is aware that it must go to you especially when there is imminent danger so both of you can get out of harms way.
A very important command that you want your parrot to learn is “NO”. If the parrot does something wrong then correct the bird so it will know not to do it again.
It will take time to tame the bird. After your parrot’s initial fear has been conquered and there is now a bond of trust and friendship, you can begin to teach him to speak certain phrases or even to sing along with you.
