Twenty years ago, the hybrid Puggle came in to being and since then its popularity rose to unexpected heights that it is now known today as the most famous of the hybrids. The Puggle is the result of intermixing a female beagle and a male pug and this was done during the 1980′s when the US was focused on developing new breeds of dogs. Dog breeder Wallace Haven developed the Puggle in Wisconsin, USA.

The Puggle is famous as a lap dog and many famous people such as Uma Thurman and Julianne Moore are known to own one. Countless of articles pertaining to the Puggle are also said to have contributed to the fame of this hybrid. Finally in 2000, Wallace Haven began commercially breeding the Puggle.

At a glance, the Puggle can be likened to an English Mastiff only several times smaller because both hold similarities in appearance and behavior. These two, except for size, have almost the same broad snout, short coat and dangling ears. For the Puggle, however, there is no set standard for its appearance and behavior because each can have differing traits depending on what and how much it inherited from the parent breeds.

Commonly, the Puggle weighs 15 to 30 pounds and stands 10 to 15 inches at the withers. Some Puggles may also have larger and fuller heads while some have it thinner and smaller. The tail of the Puggle is also long like the beagle but curls up like the Pug and that some may have the Pugs underbite and some may not have it.

The body of the Puggle is generally stocky with a short and smooth coat and that its forehead is wrinkled and its legs short. The common coat colors for this dog are fawn, white, black, and some varied combinations of two or three colors such as brown and black. The Puggle is also a heavy shedder and so it is not recommended for the allergic people.

Due to this dog’s heavy shedding, daily coat brushing is necessary and bathing occasionally. The eyes also produce discharge that might get into the wrinkled skin and under the eyes so it is best to clean these parts with a warm washcloth. The nails also grow fast and so regular nail clipping is necessary together with tooth brushing and ear cleaning.

The Puggle is a highly energetic dog and it has an independent spirit and a curious sense of smell. One of its critical needs is daily exercise in the form of walking, running, or playing in a well-spaced yard or in the park. Like the Beagle, the Puggle also loves to dig and howl and like the Pug, it likes to wander off on a mission to follow a distinct smell.

The Puggles are widely known to be highly sociable creatures that love meeting and interacting with new dog breeds and animals. They are very affectionate towards humans and they love to have some attention from the family and new people especially little children. These dogs have a great desire for closeness that they like to lick, snuggle and bond with humans.
