The Ongoing Development of the Doberman Towards Perfection

2 May 2009 No Comment

All of us had been exposed to the presence of this one particular breed in almost every historical event in the world. From historic battles and rescue operations to lively entertainments, this dog is just everywhere showing off a natural ferocity and aristocratic posture. The instant someone sees this dog, he or she can exclaim the name Doberman.

It used to be that the Doberman was viewed as a fearless and intimidating dog and so it was often assigned as a watchdog, guard dog and police dog. However, some breed enthusiasts persisted on transforming this breed in to a calmer and more loving breed. As a result, the Doberman of today is indeed suitable as family pet or friendly companion of different types of people.

Selective breeding played a major role in the alteration or minimization of the temperament of the modern day Doberman. Additionally, according to studies the Dobermans found in North America are by far calmer than their counterparts in Europe because of different breeding strategies. As of today, the modern Doberman scores high in playfulness, fair in bravery and inquisitiveness, and poor on aggressiveness.

The Doberman has an innate self-assured and fearless stature that’s why people mistake them as barbaric. The truth is, this dog is loyal, intelligent and watchful and you can depend on it at any situation given the proper training. This is a breed not to be scared of but to be proud of instead, for they only want harmony and love from the family that owns them.

The Doberman comes in a medium sized and squarely built body. It has an obviously compact, sinewy and muscular frame that is wrapped by a body tight, short, coat. A Doberman often comes in colors of black, black & tan, blue-gray, red, fawn and white.

The Doberman breed is said to have started in Apolda, Germany in 1890. A local tax collector and dog catcher named Karl Freidrich Dobermann bred the first Doberman in a desperate need to have a companion that is fearless and loyal that will accompany him to his routines on the dangerous German areas. Having access to the dog pound, he had a plethora of dog breeds to choose from.

It was believed that Dobermann devised his new breed to possess the useful characteristics of various dogs and these included the now extinct old German Shepherd, Pinscher, Beauceron, Rottweiler, Thuringian Sylvan Dog, black Greyhound, Great Dane, Weimaraner, German Shorthaired Pointer and Manchester Terrier. How Dobermann was able to breed the Doberman and what ratios or mix he used remains clouded with uncertainty. However, experts suggest that at least four of these breeds had been the major contributors to the conception of the Doberman.

When Karl Dobermann died, two Doberman ardent breeders took over the improvement of the breed. Because of Otto Goeller and Philip Gruening, we have a calmer and more sociable Doberman today. Currently, the quest for the further development of the Doberman still persists and it is clear that one of these days, we will be able to witness a Doberman that is better and smarter than the Doberman of now.
