Not too much study has been done on the whale brain. The mystery behind how whales communicate and their behavior is very curious. Having some of the largest brains on earth it seems we may have a lot to learn from whales. Their social structure and communication processes are just the beginning of what we can learn from.

Whales have an enlarged area in their cortex. This has been linked to acoustic abilities which can explain how they communicate in sound and ultrasound. They can learn about their surroundings easier this way.

The large whales have spindle neurons. These are really only found in humans and apes. It is a curious thing as to why whales have these neurons that are so similar to humans. No one knows the real reason how this occurred or why it occurred. This relation between whales and humans is interesting.

While they may have extra neurons, the whale’s brain is actually small in comparison to the size of its body. Many people that hunt whales use this as a reason to believe that they are not intelligent. Their brain equals only. 02% of their body mass and in humans, our brains are 2% of our total body mass. It has been proven that they are indeed smart and that since most of their body is blubber and their brain does not need to be used for the blubber their brains are actually very intelligent.

The whale’s brain, in particularly the sperm whale’s brain is the biggest brain in the history of planet Earth. It actually weighs more than seventeen pounds in the sperm whale. That’s huge.

Whales also have a fourth lobe that other mammals just do not have. This proves that their brains are not only bigger but more complex. They are very social and have complex communication. Much more study needs to be done on the whale’s brain but what has been discovered is just amazing. Whale’s are amazing creatures.
