The cute term Labradoodle is the name of one of the latest breed to have been conceived and developed in the 21st century. The first appearance of this breed was in Australia in the year of 1988 or 1989 and today, after just 2 decades, the Labradoodle is one of the favorite dogs of many around the world. The perfection and stability of this breed is being sought continually and so experimental breeding are on going to this day.

Wally Conron was the first person to breed the Labradoodle and he did so with an aim of developing a dog that is intelligent to carry out and obey instructions and hypoallergenic enough to be safe with every kind of person. This idea was brought on by a woman in Hawaii who requested to be given such quality of a dog for she is blind and her husband is allergic to dog hair and dander. After a few samples of hair and saliva were sent to Hawaii for testing, none of it returned with successful results.

It was then that the idea of mixing a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle occurred. The Australian Guide Dog Association got interested with this idea and so they supported this venture. The first breeding produced three puppies and hair and saliva samples were immediately sent to Hawaii for testing and the result was successful.

Because the breed is new, it is natural that they dont have an existing standard of temperament yet. However, no matter how varied, each Labradoodles character is found in their parent breed which is the Labradoodle and the Standard Poodle. The continued aim for this stability resulted to the conception of the Double Doodle, Tri Doodle and Australian Multi-Generational Labradoodle, all of which are the result of offspring cross breeding.

The general traits that can be found in all Labradoodle are friendliness, affection and inclination to families and children and highly energetic spirit. Almost all dogs of this breed manifests an affinity to water and a superb swimming talent just like how their parents are, superb swimmers. Even if the characteristics of each dog varies, however, if you look closely at them, you will realize that it can only be from the characteristics of either the Labrador Retriever or the Standard Poodle.

Both Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle are applauded for their impressive intelligence and superb training abilities. These traits are two of the most important factors that make the Labradoodle a desirable pet for almost everyone around the world. This new breed is quite adept in learning and executing verbal and sign language commands making them perfect as a guide dog for the disabled and handicapped people around the world.

The Labradoodle is also magnificent in varying sizes and coats as there is a toy Labradoodle, miniature Labradoodle and standard Labradoodle. The coat also may appear wiry, straight or curly and smooth, soft and course. The colors are often in chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, or chalk.

Because of the varying temperament and the growing popularity of the Labradoodle, the need to establish a concrete standard on this breed was realized. In view of this, two breeding and research centers for Labradoodle had been founded in Australia namely the Rutland Manor Labradoodle Breeding and Research Center in Darnum, Victoria and the Tegan Park Breeding and Research Center in Seaspray, Victoria. Both institutions test and qualify healthy and stable Labradoodles but it was the latter that introduced the Miniature Labradoodle.
